6 Steps to Social Media Powered Email List Growth
+ a few little known hacks
Are you tired of hearing about the untapped potential of email marketing, only to find yourself lost in without a clear road map to actually build and grow your list?
Hearing common phrases like “the money is in the list" get thrown around, can be quite disheartening, especially when yet you just need to get a list going in the first place.
If you’ve ever felt the frustration of pouring your heart into creating and promoting lead magnets, setting up automations, only to hear crickets in response, you’re not alone. I was there too not too long ago.
But today is the day to break free from this cycle of disappointment.
I’m going to show you a proven strategy to transform your social media presence into a powerful tool for rapidly growing your email list – without spending a dime on ads.
Building a specific social media campaign around a free resource can help grow your email list.
This is my favourite way to grow my email list these days. Paid ads have their place, but I find that this method yields a much warmer list.
Okay, let’s get to it:
➡️ Step 1: Think about those who are just at the beginning stages of solving the kinds of problems you help people with. Think about what they likely struggle with the most, and craft a freebie offer around that.
Now, this is where most people stumble. They spend weeks creating fancy lead magnets - ebooks and planners etc, building complicated landing pages and automations before the freebie is even validated.
Ask me how I know, because I have been there and done that.
After close to two years of doing this, I have learned and found that a good lead magnet is one that is consumable within 10 minutes, solves a specific micro problem, while revealing a larger issue.
That’s my go-to rule of thumb that I picked up from some of the most experienced marketers in the space. This could simply be a Google Doc or Loom, etc.
No need to go down the Canva rabbit hole. The important thing here is to deliver the value in the most efficient way.
Then place it on as simple opt in page to facilitate the delivery and start promoting it right away. You can swipe away freebie landing page here for free and save even more time.
➡️ Step 2: Put out an offer post like this: [I’ll use Facebook as an example, but you can apply the same to your platform of choice.]
“My [Solutions / Trick/Hack/Secret] brings me [results] without [pain]. Who wants a copy?”
Or something similar, you get the idea
➡️ Step 3: Promote the heck out of it on all your channels by sending people to a special opt-in page that just requires them to trade their email for all that juicy value.
Do that in your content, your reels, stories, link in bio, profile banner, profile picture, pinned post, etc.
Don’t just rely on the traditional CTAs like “the link is in bio.”
It’s too much to ask; trust me, people are busy and overwhelmed. Most won’t go to the bio, they’ll just keep scrolling.
Don’t even say, “DM me and I’ll send it to you”- again, too much to ask.
Think, how can I make it as easy as possible? A good option is to get them to raise their hand.
Say something line, “Drop a 1 below, and I’ll send it to you.” That’s it. The rest of the work is on you.
Hint: Facebook’s algorithm does not like CTAs with the term “Comment or Comment below”.
➡️ Step 4: Reply to each of the comments with something like “I got you, check your DMs”. Then go to the DMs, say hello and confirm that they actually want the freebie. And then deliver the goods.
Don’t skip this step - replying to their comment and saying hello in the DMs is courteous. It also signals to the algorithm that you are being social, and therefore shows your content to more people.
Again, leverage.
➡️ Step 5: After a few days, check in to see how they found the resources helpful and if they have any questions on it. You will be surprised at how many people raise their hands and end up not taking the goods.
There’s a variety of reasons for this - perhaps your DM came in when the pizza was just being delivered at the door, and they never got back to it. So this will be a good time to remind them.
Say you don’t have a large social media following?
You can go to communities where your ideal audience hangs out.
Search your topic or scan through the posts - there are always people asking questions.
You can respond with a valuable comment and mention your freebie at the end.
Chances are there are many others with the same question, and they will reply asking for the freebie.
I have seen this work out countless times.
➡️ Step 6: Rinse and repeat all of the above and watch your email list grow. Of course, the freebies must be strategic and related to your main offers and target audience.
See? You can literally build an email list like this without ever paying for an ad. You do pay with your time, though. It’s doable, but you have to be ready to put in the work.
Don’t just wait for folks to find your profile and click your links and opt in for your stuff.
Another thing: there are people who will subscribe, download the thing, and leave immediately - as in unsubscribe.
That's totally okay. Don’t let that discourage you.
You only want people who are genuinely interested in what you do. So be sure to delete unsubscribes often.
